inga meldere
1979
Meldere, the Latvian, paints anonymous faceless people, or rather - memories of them. The exteriors and interiors remind us – although rather obscurely – of the time beyond us, maybe the 1920s, maybe the end of the 19th century. The colours are surreal, even mythical, diving into a reality found only in fairy-tales. While admitting all this, we cannot bypass the confession: Meldere’s worlds are dispersing. Going somewhere. It becomes a philosophical question whether they melt into the surroundings or into themselves; is the dispersal escapist or real, is Alfa equal to Omega and what is the whole thing supposed to mean.
