Truth be told, this is not really a “passion” but more like an “element of surprise” that charms me in Vītolinš’ work. A surprise he received after studying the technological ruins of past generations that no longer mean much to anybody. There is nothing left of the futuristic faith in progress; even cases of recycling of the previous technological structures have lost their ground. These paintings are not weaving intricate geometric networks or dealing with giving deep high-tech meaning to essentially low-fi objects in a pop-like manner. The technology is there but let’s be honest: the problems in humanism are not created by industrialization (like it happened in the 19th century) but mainly by the changes on the micro-level – most of all in gene technology. That’s why Vītolinš’ man-made landscapes affect us like a blast from the past: something that has lost its meaning, has been run over by time and is somewhat out-of place and even obscene in its presence.
